KIDS OF THE SOUTHWEST

2010 Habitat Project

The Kids Of The Southwest have taken on a huge new project to help Elephant Butte's bass population.  The kids partnered with Islands West, Neal Brown, Earl Conway, and many members of the New Mexico Game and Fish.  Earl Conway is the key link as he discovered a small company called Floating Islands West who have done some incredible work with floating botanical gardens.  They believed they had a product that would benefit our lake.  Simply said they have designed a portable spawning bed for fish that also includes cover and protection for the fry.  The Juniors did all the work as you will see in the photos below.  They gathered the plants, assembled the Island, transplanted the plants, filled the spawning beds with gravel, and used paddle boats to deploy the Island.  Sounds easy think again the pictures don't do the kids enough justice.  We want to give special thanks to a few outstanding kids; Clayton and Brooke Ramsey, Donald Peters, and Julian Carver.  The KSW want to thank the entire crew from Floating Islands West (lead-Laddie Flock), Earl Conway-NMBFN Conservation Director, Neal Brown-Marina Owner, Frank Ramsey Youth Director for KSW and Director for the American Fishing Tour, Ken Cunningham and Casey L. Harthorn NMGF, plus many more individuals.
